The Board of Leaders for Peace met on June 12, 2025, for its annual conference. The event provided an opportunity to discuss and debate the content of the 2025 annual report against a backdrop of growing tensions: 2024 saw the highest level of global military spending since the end of the Cold War.
The annual conference also served as an opportunity to welcome three new members to the Leaders for Peace Board:
- Prime Minister Michel Barnier
- His Excellency José Augusto Duarte, Ambassador of Portugal to Spain
- Her Excellency Veronika Wand-Danielsson, former Ambassador of Sweden to France
A process of global multipolarization
During the plenary session, the Leaders acknowledged the world’s growing multipolarity, which significantly undermines diplomatic efforts to end conflicts. However, potential differences must not stand in the way of working toward peace and its concrete implementation at the political, diplomatic, and social levels.
Leaders for Peace, through the words of its Honorary President, Mr. Jean-Pierre Raffarin, once again reaffirmed its commitment to peace education and emphasized the need to build a new form of governance.
Areas for consideration for the 2025 report
During the meeting, five key issues were highlighted and will be the subject of operational recommendations in the 2025 report.
- Reform of the UN Security Council
- Peace and security in the Middle East
- Gender equality
- Pandemics
- Climate change
