Leaders pour la paix

In March 2026, His Excellency Motohide Yoshikawa, a board member of Leaders for Peace, retired from his position at the International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan. The occasion provided him with an opportunity to reflect on the seven years he spent at ICU and to deliver a final lecture entitled “The Future of the United Nations: A Japanese Perspective.”

During his address, H.E. Yoshikawa notably emphasized that the current functioning of the United Nations Security Council and particularly the veto power held by its permanent members, severely limits the international community’s ability to respond effectively to crises such as those in Ukraine and Gaza. He therefore called for a reform of the Security Council.

H.E. Yoshikawa also highlighted the important role Japan has played within the United Nations. A member since 1956, Japan has distinguished itself through its active and consistent contributions across various UN bodies.

Finally, H.E. Yoshikawa stressed the importance of dialogue, respect for diversity, and international cooperation in an increasingly divided world, values that Leaders for Peace also promotes through its various initiatives.
