Itinerant School of Peace – Pontifical Lateran University
In parts of the world where there are no embassies, religious leaders play an important role. It is with this in mind that the Leaders for Peace Foundation, at the instigation of Pope Francis, decided to collaborate on a joint program with the Pontifical Lateran University through its Itinerant School of Peace (EIP) project. This year, Leaders for Peace has strengthened important educational partnerships with the Pontifical Lateran University. In addition to offering training in Peace Studies, it trains seminarians who are actively engaged in countries plagued by violence and conflict. Given the crucial role of seminarians in peace processes, it is essential to raise their awareness of mediation and negotiation with armed groups. In this context, the Itinerant School of Peace project was launched in December 2022 at the Lateran, with the collaboration of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, the University of Geneva, Sciences Po Paris, the Community of Sant’Egidio, and with the support of the French Embassy to the Holy See. During these two days of training, faculty and researchers from Sciences Po and the Department of Peace Studies at the Pontifical Lateran University (PUL), as well as members of the board of the Leaders for Peace Foundation, spoke to share their experiences and knowledge. The Itinerant School of Peace concluded with a roundtable discussion on interfaith dialogue and the role of religion in conflict resolution. The various modules offered as part of the School addressed the following topics: Leadership. “To reach peace, teach peace” John Paul II In the face of resurgent dangers and new threats, Leaders for Peace has decided to put the experience of its leaders at the service of tomorrow’s leaders. The Traveling Universities of Peace are thus designed to prepare young people for this world of unprecedented change and radical uncertainty. It is through knowledge that we can provide the tools for understanding and action, opening up future prospects to contribute positively and peacefully to the building of the world. In response to growing tensions in the Caucasus, Leaders for Peace decided to hold the fifth edition of the Traveling Schools of Peace in Yerevan, in partnership with the French University in Armenia. Over three days, more than one hundred Armenian students had the opportunity to attend courses taught by high-level speakers. Diplomats, politicians, distinguished professors, and UN representatives addressed major issues in international governance such as leadership, artificial intelligence, the geopolitics of resources, peacebuilding, transitional justice, and negotiation. “This was an incredible experience that has greatly enriched my knowledge and practical skills. “Pour atteindre la Paix, enseignez la Paix” Jean-Paul II Face à la résurgence des périls et des nouvelles menaces, Leaders pour la Paix a décidé de mettre l’expérience de ses leaders au service des leaders de demain. Les Universités Itinérantes de la Paix ont ainsi pour objectif de préparer les jeunes à ce monde de transformations inédites et d’incertitudes radicales. C’est par le savoir que nous pourrons donner des clés de lecture et d’actions, permettre des perspectives d’avenir pour contribuer positivement et pacifiquement à la construction du monde. En réponse aux tensions croissantes au Caucase, Leaders pour la Paix a décidé de mener sa cinquième édition des Écoles Itinérantes de la Paix à Erevan, en partenariat avec l’Université Française en Arménie. Pendant trois jours, plus de cent étudiants arméniens ont eu l’opportunité d’assister à des cours dispensés par des intervenants de haut niveau. Official Mission: Mediation in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Mediation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – March 2023 In consultation with Pope Francis and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres,a delegation of Leaders for Peace, led by Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, traveled to Kinshasa inthe Democratic Republic of the Congo for an official mission aimed at elaborating a roadmap for possiblecrisis exit strategies, particularly focusing on the situation in the eastern part of the country. The Leadersfor Peace were mobilized on the ground by several collaborators, notably Dr. and Nobel Peace Prizelaureate, Mr. Denis Mukwege, who has been particularly committed to combating violence andmutilations against women in this endless war amidst a challenging electoral period. Pope Francis, during an audience granted to a delegation of Leaders for Peace, urged for mobilization inthe face of the suffering of the Congolese population.In parallel with His Holiness’s encouragement, the Secretary-General of the United Nationsrecommended to the Leaders for Peace, during their annual visit to New York, to intervene in order tofurther mobilize the international community regarding the conflict prevailing in the eastern part of theDemocratic Republic of the Congo, where despite the crimes committed, passivity persists. « Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. » Nelson Mandela Peace can no longer be considered a utopia but rather constitutes the condition and optimal means forsustainable prosperity. Faced with the combined effects of the resurgence of forgotten perils and theemergence of new threats, it is our collective responsibility to arm future generations in the fight forpeace. This is the founding vocation of the Itinerant Schools of Peace: to ensure that young peoplereceive the transmission of tools and methods for building peace by sanctifying the universal partresiding within each of us, respecting all differences and cultures. Humbly, because we are aware of theweight of the task, but animated by the power of passion, the Foundation, through this initiative, aims toenrich and deepen a new global ecosystem of peace by adopting a utilitarian vision rather than acharitable one of development. Leaders for Peace organized, in partnership with the renowned Amadou Gon Coulibaly Institute ofPolitical Training, its 4th edition of the Itinerant Schools of Peace in March 2023, in Abidjan, Côted’Ivoire. Out of the 4000 applications received, 100 students were selected to participate in this seminar. Duringwhich they were able to receive instruction on academic subjects essential to engagement for peace andunderstanding of global issues such as: energy transition, geopolitics of water, gender issues, the role ofmedia and new technologies, terrorism threats in Africa, and leadership. Students also had theopportunity, during this training, to debate with the professors and leaders present, sparking excitingdiscussions, notably on the issues of water resource management and gender in politics. Dans les régions du monde où il n’y a pas d’ambassades, un rôle important est joué par les figures religieuses. C’est dans cette perspective que la Fondation des Leaders Pour la Paix, à l’instigation du Pape François, a décidé de collaborer autour d’un programme commun avec l’université Pontificale du Latran à travers son projet d’École Itinérante de la Paix (EIP). Leaders Pour la Paix a consolidé cette année des partenariats pédagogiques importants avec l’université Pontificale du Latran. En plus de proposer une formation en Sciences de la Paix, elle forme des séminaristes qui sont activement engagés dans des pays en proie à la violence et aux conflits. Étant donné le rôle crucial des séminaristes dans les processus de paix, il est essentiel de les sensibiliser à la médiation et à la négociation avec les groupes armés. Dans ce contexte, le projet d’École Itinérante de la Paix a été mis en œuvre en décembre 2022 au Latran, avec le concours du Dicastère pour la Culture et l’Éducation, l’Université de Genève, Sciences Po Paris, la communauté de Sant’Egidio et avec le soutien de l’Ambassade de France près le Saint-Siège. Durant ces deux jours de formation, des enseignants et chercheurs de Sciences Po et du département des Sciences de la Paix de l’Université du Latran (PUL) ainsi que des membres du board de la Fondation des Leaders pour la Paix sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et leurs connaissances. L’École Itinérante de la Paix s’est achevée autour d’une table ronde sur la question de l’interreligieux et de la place de la religion dans la résolution des conflits. « L’éducation est l’arme la plus puissante que l’on puisse utiliser pour changer le monde » Nelson Mandela La Paix ne peut plus être considérée comme une utopie, mais constitue au contraire la condition et le moyen optimal de la prospérité durable. Face aux effets conjugués de la résurgence de périls oubliés et de l’apparition de nouvelles menaces, il est de notre responsabilité collective d’armer les générations futures dans le combat pour la Paix. C’est là la vocation fondatrice des Écoles Itinérante de la Paix : assurer aux jeunes la transmission des outils et des méthodes de construction de la Paix en sanctuarisant la part d’universel résidant en chacun de nous, dans le respect de toutes les différences et de toutes les cultures.
